The December 2009 retail sales in UK has come out at a respectable 2.1% growth over the corresponding period last year. The figure is up primarily due to the substantial rise in the petroleum product prices.
The high rate of unemployment may keep the retail sales at a lower level in the coming few months. The December figure shows a modest growth of 0.3% over November figure, which is in line with the analyst estimates.
